Thanks to the thousands of #union backers who have stood up to support Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center and our members, the Pritzker administration’s Department of Human Services is backtracking a bit on its plan to downsize Choate!The administration announced last week that it will be retaining 25 mental health beds at Choate—under their previous plan, there would have been none. But this still means that the administration is planning to cut 50 beds for vitally needed mental health services and lay off the employees who provide those services.However, the fight isn't over! The AFSCME state bargaining committee—220 members strong, representing 42,000 state employees from 70 local unions—met in full last week to develop our union’s proposals for negotiations for the next State of Illinois master contract. This committee is strong and united to win the fairness, dignity and respect state employees deserve.

Anti-union politicians want to take it all away.We need to elect candidates who understand the value of our work, respect our contributions, and are willing to stand with us to protect the rights we’ve worked so hard to secure.AFSCME PEOPLE has endorsed many strong pro-worker, pro-union candidates on the ballot this election who understand the challenges we face and have demonstrated a real commitment to standing with us. But even the strongest candidates need support to win—and that’s where you come in. We need your support as a Get Out the Vote volunteer!Your involvement is critical in mobilizing to build a strong election volunteer program. Every volunteer shift makes a difference, and to reward union members who step up, AFSCME Council 31 is offering special items to show appreciation.Every AFSCME member who volunteers will get a limited-edition AFSCME PEOPLE t-shirt, available in both unisex and women’s cut. The more volunteer shifts you work, the more opportunities you'll have to earn additional swag to show off your union pride.Members who volunteer for the get out the vote program on Saturday, October 24th and Saturday, October 31st will be eligible for a $100 stipend. (Stipends will be paid by check by AFSCME Council 31 and may take approximately 1–2 weeks to process and receive.)Stipends will also be offered for members who volunteer on Election Day: $150 for the full day/$75 for half the day.The flyer below contains a QR code you can use to register for volunteer shifts.
